SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):414 (abstract no. PD0265). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370623 AB OBJECTIVE: To document the effectiveness and relevance of Danchurchaid's (DCA, a Danish church-affiliated NGO) involvement in AIDS sector support 1987-1992. METHODS: The 8 major grassroots AIDS projects supported by DCA in Malawi, Lesotho, Tanzania, Thailand and Uganda were subject for study. A combination of document reviews, observations and interviews with staff, collaborating partners and ultimate beneficiaries was applied. Data were analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS: The strategies supported were: A. Ensuring safe blood supply, B. Protecting health staff, C. Protecting the public, D. Care of patients in hospital and home, E. Supporting survivors, F. Community support and development, G. Developing culture specific interventions, H. Monitoring the epidemic. Most emphasis had been placed on A, B, C, D, and H. The strategies were considered to have been relevant & appropriate for the time and local situations. However, in 1992, the HIV/AIDS situation had worsened, other sources of assistance and more knowledge and experience with AIDS prevention and control had become available, and the vertical approach was no longer considered relevant. CONCLUSION: A change towards a comprehensive community development approach is recommended with most emphasis on strategies C-G.
